[Interview][2010.12.24] HyungJun: Love, Future, Dream

Having debuted in 2006 as the rival alongside DBSG, SS501 has now stood up in solo paths. Due to the expiry of their contract, SS501 was dispersed here and there, and is now striving for each’s individual activities. Amidst which, Kim Hyung Jun is striving not just as a singer but also as an actor wherein he attends many acting lessons for the sake of acting. He may still be a rookie in acting, but his passion actually does not make him envious of veteran actors as much as his heart holds that one desire. He who is displaying some acting skills in the musical [Cafein] recently has met up with us in Shinsadong’s fine dining restaurant Elbon as we drank to wines. We heard honest talks from Kim Hyung Jun about his future, dream and, love.

#Kim Hyun Joong starred in [Boys over Flowers] made me envious.
Kim Hyung Jun who dreams of being an actor was actually envious of SS501′s Kim Hyun Joong. Reason it being Kim Hyun Joong is SS501′s representative icon and had also starred in [Boys over Flowers] and [Playful Kiss] where he’s already laid down his actor status.
“To be honest, when Hyun Joong hyung starred in [Boys over Flowers] back then I was already envious. I wanted to do acting too. However the chance didn’t come. And I didn’t know that it probably was why it made me yearn to do acting even more. Perhaps it began since then. I work hard to show my side as a true status-ed actor”.

The road Kim Hyung Jun has to walk ahead is still far. Through musical [Cafein], he’s already let known about his first involvement as an actor. Reactions from the audiences wasn’t bad, in fact. Even if you were to credit this to be the passionate responses coming from his fans, the age range of these theatre-filling audiences was very much wide.
“There were many couples who came to watch. Of course people from 10s to 40s generation was present too. Seems like many people are on the rise to taking a liking in my still-raw acting ne. For me too, I’ve gained much strength from the audiences’ support and is doing all my best right now”.

The witty him who usually loves to joke around stars across as the role of a braggy sommelier in [Cafein]. Kim Hyung Jun finds that his acting somewhat improves than rehearsals whenever he comes to stand on the stage of [Cafein]. Somewhat devious and stuck-up acting is ‘the best’. To him, it does not seem like the [Acting Awards] is far from his reach.
#Solo Striving? Very much burdened.
With regards to SS501′s expiry of contract, it was actually something much earlier than what most people know about. However, SS501 members are only carrying out their solo activities only like year-end now since their former agency’s CEO was fighting his illness back then and wasn’t aware of their decisions. However, all of SS501′s thoughts was not able to be alike (to be together). Eventually, it turned out to be that members chose to locate new agencies to support their each’s individual activities. For him, he chose S-Plus Entertainment where Kang Ji-hwan is a part of.
“For the sake of our individual activities, we moved agencies. When I moved agency I was very worried, I’ve gotta adapt, and also deal with more improved singing and acting skills isn’t it. Even if I may do acting I’ll still definitely do singing. At first when I moved agency, I was very burdened if I could succeed or not, if I could gain recognition from fans as Kim Hyung Jun or not, and it’s true that all of these became my worries. All feedbacks are given to me by fans — I really think of it this manner”.

He also stated that he felt sad that people thought he won’t be continuing with SS501 anymore. He felt awkward, disappointed and sad that he wouldn’t be able to see people like Park Jung Min and Kim Kyu Jong every day whom he had lived together with, but still, he’s now already adapted to a certain degree.
#Marriage at 29 years old, Will not exceed 30 years old.
To Kim Hyung Jun, marriage is just like a mssion. He intends to get married at 29 years old as he wants to get married faster. Of course too, he thinks that once a suitable person appears, he will also be able to get married much earlier. His view is that marriage will be of a positive influence to his showbiz activities as well.
We asked the warmingly nice and well-mannered him how many girlfriends has he had dated before? To which he confessed he’s met about 3 girlfriends up until now.
For now, sad it may be, he does not have a girlfriend. He’s determined to be more developed in area of acting rather than locating for a girlfriend in the next 1~2 years. In order for him to hear ‘Kim Hyung Jun has succeeded’ instead of as a part of SS501, it will be that love for him will be delayed for the moment. His ideal type is that of a straight-forward and comfortable style. Of course if she’s pretty it will be best.
#2011 February Solo Album release… “Singing goes on”
Besides standing on stage for appearance in [Cafein], Kim Hyung Jun spends remaining of his time for his album recording. His mini album is in midst of preparation and is targeted for release in February next year. The musical persona will not be too different from SS501′s existent musical tendency as well. However he’s hinted that it will be an album filled with abundancy of his unique charm.
“Am now in the stage of song receiving. For songs already decided, I’m in midst of practising and recording for it, and is kinda purplexing over them with my staff. I’m working hard in aiming to hear that I’ve succeeded well on my own feet. For me, I like dance and since I like SS501′s music, it will not be too overly different from the already existent music that we have”.

We hope that the year of 2011 will become a successful year for Kim Hyung Jun not as a singer but also as an actor.
“I will become a good singer and natural actor. Though I’m in musical [Cafein] for this year, I’m wanting to try out official acting next year. Hopefully a somewhat comical and yet emotional-impactful character. The day where my name appears in the movie credits won’t be too far off. I’ll develop into a good actor so please show me much adore and love”.

Kim Hyung Jun "Choosing a Difficult Musical, I Miss Being an Idol"

Source: news nate
Korean-English Translation: Wonderrrgirl @ Love501.com
Please repost with full credit

After SS501 Kim Hyung Jun (23) transferred to the agency, he took up the challenge of a musical. After debuting in 2005 and despite being a singer for about 6 years, he became a newcomer in terms of musical stage. The idol has stretched himself to face up to the challenges of the musical. The reason for Kim Hyung Jun’s eye catching performance despite no experience in acting is because his double role in ‘Cafe-in’ Musical.

During the times of SS501 activities, because of his title as “Maknae”, the young impression given to Kim Hyung Jun then made his mature image even more prominent now. Becoming more talkative, his gestures are also bigger now. Due to the musical, “Became a solo member before the rest because of having the desire for acting and thus accepting the musical. Due to two months of practice before standing on the stage, and because of this, the thought ‘I want to work hard for this’ overwhelmed me. I was touched to be able to withstand everything well. ”

Grasping the script and memorising it takes about a little more than a month. One-third of the 60-70 pages of script for Kim Hyung Jun includes singing, resulting increasing stress on him. Besides, the double-role also caused confusion. Kim Hyung Jun revealed out that “I’ve chosen the difficult path”. From recently until now, confusion arises occasionally because of the double-role. But now, I seemed to be gradually getting how I should do it. During the performance I can slowly go into it and I can see the differences now.”
Together in SS501′s activities, Park Jung Min went to watch Kim Hyung Jun’s performance and gave him a cold assessment. Kim Hyung Jun said, “Park Jung Min said that ” if I’m shrivelled (with the preformance) at first, I became greatly surprised and impressed as days go by and be immersed by it.” I conclude that he seems to like it. ”

It is difficult for fanciful idol singers and musicals to establish a position due to inexperience. “Idol singers receives unconditional support from the fans. They are unaware of the realities of the world that can spring up on them. But now, the audience present their direct responses base on what they’ve seen. There is no more ‘shield’. (Smiles) Despite also working for the smiles of the fans, but through the musical I think great opportunities can be gained. I don’t know about others but personally this is the appeal of it.”

Kim Hyung Jun said, “Sometimes (Idols) want to go back to before.” Before the audience come to watch, anticipation such as [i]“How many people will be here today” , [i]“If it’s a SS501 activity, will more fans want to come. During the time of the 5 of us, there are thousands of fans. Now the fans have been decreased to about hundreds.”, “Will the hall be tightly packed” “Will there be many support and cheers”. I will feel sorriness and loneliness. But I have to adapt to it. Otherwise I won’t be able to do anything. ”

In the past, he shouted out “geun-ja-kam” (Acronym for Having No Self-confidence), now the new meaning of “geun-ja-kam” transformed into “Having Self-confidence”. Through the musical, a larger and wider fanbase was gained. Kim Hyung Jun’s image as a “Ya-mang-dol (Idol with ambition)” can been seen. Next year as a solo member, He has an eye for appearing with a SS501 group album and a drama. While being busy, he does not want to have a late marriage.
“I have in mind towards a stable family. I will search to death the person I want to be with. I want about 4 children. 3 sons and 1 daughter? (Smiles) ”

While being outside and busy with the musical performance, Kim Hyung Jun continue to keep his 2:00AM SBS Power FM “Kim Hyung Jun’s Music High” DJ position. Nurses noonas etc clung on tightly to Kim Hyung Jun’s chattiness, “Ambitious people find it interesting. It’s a small world.” , ” Thought it’s a little early to have the heart to go, this seems to be forgotten shortly. Now I want to protect this position firmly.”, such self-confidence were expressed.
” ‘Idol succeeds at everything’ this is definitely not true. There are serious skills involved. In a year each, I wish to progress with a SS501 group album and concert. Big dreams like becoming a well-known producer-name. Together with younger brother Kibum (U-Kiss) and having a huge sense of responsibility towards him, I think I can do much better.”

Named on his own as “Year 2011′s Rising Star” Kim Hyung Jun. In future, he will offer a diversed spectrum of colours. Do anticipate.

SS501 Kim Hyung Jun debuted in a musical with ‘Café In’

Repost with full credits
News: Naver
Trans: Only Jun (kimhyungjun.net)

SS501 Kim Hyung Jun debuted in a musical with ‘Café In’ “Was startled by my own brazenness inside (the story plot)”

“I didn’t know I have such brazenness hidden within me (laughs)”
Debuting via ‘Café In’ (Baekham Arts Hall), Group SS501’s Kim Hyung Jun was in a good mood during the interview. He agrees that his character is very similar to the ‘Ji Min’ in the story plot who is “also born naturally with a cheerful deposition.”
He is just like a bright untainted youth. For instance when he said, “When singing song could only stand on stage for 3 minutes but for musical, you can breathe in the same air and enjoy  1.5 hour with the audience so it feels very good.”

Although this is his musical debut, acting is considered to be proficient. He has to digest 2 roles at the same time as Café Barista Sae Jin’s (Sin Eui Jeong / Wo Geum Ji) partner, Sommelier ‘Ji Min’ and the gentleman ‘Jeong Min’. While acting as Ji Min, would differentiate by wearing rabbit teeth and glasses. Voices at this point would also be of a higher tone and behavior would also be more exaggerated.
“The first time round was very scary and nerve wrecking. Wondering if I could do well, although I was very worried, but once I stood on stage, I eventually adapted to it subconsciously. I have such hidden ability.

Now, on the contrary, I often hear people telling me not to over-do it and so forth. (laughs)”
Of course, there has not been without mistakes. This can be considered as his worst mistake. Happened just a few days after the opening performance. When Jeong Min was to be transformed into Ji Min, he has forgotten to bring his glasses and rabbit teeth along on stage. “Suddenly the audiences’ expression did not look good. Gasping, and realising the mistake, ‘Oh, Wait a moment~’ I improvised and return to backstage to wear (my props) properly”. He demonstrated his ability to improvise and regain his confidence promptly.

What are your thoughts about being a member of a popular group challenging a new arena?

1, 2 years after debuting in 2005, was really excited. I thought everything seems to be going well…, I didn’t understand the harshness of the cold reality. Have already got rid of such delusions and have not experience them for a long time.

Born as an Idol so had to work extremely hard to achieve the status of new actor to perform in ‘Café In’. Have to greet everyone pleasantly, and also accept the guidance from the seniors with a thankful heart. Now he has become the “mood maker” in the dressing room, showing affection for people around him.

A few days ago his SS501 close colleague Park Jung Min came and showed his support. Park Jung Min has performed in ‘Grease’ last year, hence making him the musical senior. “He is always telling me that if I have any doubts I can bring it up to him and to treat him as a senior.” But “I have nothing I want to learn” (laughs). Although there was no questions for him, Park Jung Min still did not forget to show his warm encouragement by saying “I witnessed Kim Hyung Jun’s new look”. He also posted in his fan café that ‘in SS501 was totally unaware of it, but now was able to see a new side to Kim Hyung Jun’s charm”, hence he feels really happy.

Thoughts of the drama that you would like to challenge next year. “Leading role or supporting role it does not matter.  It is good as long as the actor’s image has ‘Character’.”
Before his performances for ‘Café In’ ends in January, there are already plans for his solo album to be released in February. Being positive in everything he does, the future looks bright for ambitious youth Kim Hyung Jun.

[Article] 'Pretty Boy' Pop Stars Rush to Musicals 101130

Just saw this article off from my dashboard. Baby is all over the news!! Haha:)) Too bad I haven't blogged it on the 30th of November. It's here anway, so...

Shared by: sharingyoochun.net

For the past few years, Korean “idols” or members of popular boy/girl bands have begun gracing the musical stage ― rushing into the dramatic arts as a gateway to acting.
Seen as the natural stepping stone for singers looking to make some headway into the dramatic arts, stage musicals have fast become the platform of choice for two reasons: They allow them to do what they’re best at ― dancing and singing ― and a chance to prove their mettle in the acting game.
Some stars have seen success, others have been blasted for their ill-conceived venture.

SHINee’s Onew and SS501’s Kim Hyung-joon have been the most recent additions to the list of boy band members switching gears to musicals, joining contemporaries like former TVXQ member Xiah and Tae-yeon of Girls Generation.

Onew’s fall debut with the Korean adaptation of “Rock of Ages” impressed both theater critics and audiences alike with some even saying the singer-turned-musical actor one-upped veteran Korean Wave star Ahn Jae-wook who switched off with the crooner in the lead role throughout its month-long engagement.

In stark contrast, Kim’s gig as a musical actor kicked off to a stuttering start last week with the original production “Caffeine” at the Baekam Art Hall in southern Seoul. SHINee’s Onew (center) made an impressive debut with the Korean adaptation of “Rock of Ages.” (M Musical)

His debut was met with a lukewarm response, many saying the fledgling actor had looked awkward and even nervous during key scenes which required him to be confident.

This kind of “shoot first, ask questions later” approach doesn’t seem to faze most musical production houses though as the casting of a boy band or girl band member alone is enough to generate huge interest from the public.

Because the industry has been steadfastly in decline due to an oversaturated market, earning the quick buck has become what matters most.

One of the few successful cases has without a doubt been Xiah’s debut.
Xiah, a former member with hugely popular boy band TVXQ, made a debut with “Mozart” earlier in January which garnered the 23-year-old a slew of acting honors and critical acclaim.

Meanwhile, those who crashed and burned at the court of public opinion were largely criticized for their lack of commitment that was reflected in their stilted performances.

Choi Sung-hee, or Bada as most of her fans know her from her heyday with all-girl band S.E.S., is a veteran of the musical scene who has voiced her frank opinion on the veritable gold rush into the theater arts by her younger contemporaries.

Currently starring in the musical “Broadway 42nd Street,” the production’s theater troupe opened its doors to the press earlier in September where Choi took time off from the rigorous pre-show rehearsals at the KEPCO Hanjeon Art Center in Seoul to field questions about her musical ― but most of all about the rising trend of K-pop idols entering the scene.

The production, having wrapped its run in the capital city, is slated to move on to Goyang, Gyeonggi Province, starting Dec. 3.
“You have to be absolutely sure that this is what you want to do before you go any further,” she was quoted as saying.
“You need to have an actor’s mindset and a responsibility to the craft of acting. Acting in a musical requires you to give yourself and open yourself to your cast mates and if you’re not prepared to do that, the audience won’t be engaged in your performance and that type of dedication isn’t something the head of a production company can give you.”
Choi is considered one of the first K-pop singers to make way onto the musical stage, debuting in 2003 with “Peppermint.”
Since then, she has starred in such hit stage musicals as “200 Pounds Beauty,” cementing her status as one of the local performing and dramatic arts scene’s marquee names.
Echoing her sentiment is veteran actor Jo Jae-hyun (“Bad Guy,” “Address Unknown”) who says singers attempting to successfully cross over to acting must be fully committed.
“For anyone looking to break into theater arts, they have to realize the amount of preparation and time it takes to acclimate to performing on stage because stage acting is an entirely different beast to film or television,” he told The Korea Herald.
“Acting for the stage is one of the most difficult crafts ― even for traditional actors ― and for singers to jump into the fray like that is commendable but you really have to be fully committed because otherwise you’re going to learn the hard way that it isn’t something you just pick up on a whim or by suggestions from your management company.”
